Family Fun: Edgewater Park

After a pretty tough week, where I saw Tom not more than an hour every day, we enjoyed being able to spend the second half of yesterday together as a family. We tried the Mexican restaurant Villa y Zapata for the first time, and were hugely impressed. We’ll definitely be back. I wish I’d taken a picture. It’s one of those seriously hole-in-the-wall places, in the middle of the poor latino community downtown. The entire exterior of the building was painted with red, white and green stripes. The food was probably the best Mexican we’ve had in Cleveland. If you go, try the Tinga Poblana- you won’t be disappointed.
Afterwards, we headed to the nearby Edgewater park. It was so relaxing to play in the sand, and listen to the lapping of the waves.

Scotland was in absolute heaven.

Our Cleveland boy- notice the skyline in the background

As we were walking the length of the beach Tom mentioned that he prefers Edgewater to more secluded, suburb beaches, because of the people. He loves how accessible a beach is to all walks of life. I’ll have to admit often feeling like I’d rather go to the far off beaches where the “beach bums” smoke less, yell at their kids less, etc. However, walking along I saw his point. Edgewater is a truly Cleveland experience. It’s the beach you should visit as a tourist to really take in the Cleveland culture. We saw two guys sitting on buckets doing watercolors of the Cleveland skyline. We saw a group of older men sitting at tables playing chess. We saw lots of young inner city families taking advantage of free “pool.” I suddenly felt a great warmth towards the people on the beach. Sure they may “choose to sin differently than I do” but they were trying to make family memories just like we were. I’m so grateful for a husband who helps me see life through a more positive lens, and who’s love for all people is so contagious.
