Thanks to all those who commented on the “True to yourself” post. Several of you brought up the fact that being true to oneself might not encourage the growth necessary to become all that you can be. I would suggest however that the promptings of the spirit are often so internal that they are often called one’s conscience. When a person is confirmed they are told to “Receive the Holy Ghost.” I’ve always found the word receive interesting. They don’t say, listen to or follow, but receive. To me that suggests that the Holy Ghost and his promptings are very internal. Hence, why whisperings of the Holy Ghost are so difficult to distinguish from one’s conscience.
This week as I was studying for my lesson I was struck by the last verse in the ninth chapter of John. “Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.” It took a couple of reads before I grasped His message. Once I become aware of a truth it becomes a part of me, and I become responsible for acting accordingly. Once I “see” that I have a special calling to care for the widows, I am not being true to myself if I act “blind.” If you see your potential behind a glass wall, you aren’t being true to yourself- your future self perhaps, if you don’t strive towards that. We are eternal beings, only in the time trapped mortal realm need we equate “oneself” with the present.
