While Stan was here we decided to visit the homestead where his ancestor once farmed and joined the church. Jacob Foutz lived about 60 miles from here on 80 acres of land with his wife Margaret Mann. Historic records noted the streets: Hagerman, Riggle, and Snyder as being corners of his property. With the use of google maps Tom identified the spot and we drove out there. On the drive down, per my request, Stan told us stories of his grandfather and father. It made for a delightful day. Ever since I became pregnant with Scotland, I’ve felt a desire to know the stories of Tom’s side of the family, so I could share them with my son. One of the reasons we chose the middle name “J” for Scotland was after this man, Jacob as well as his son Joseph. Both were pivotal members of the church in his formative years. Jacob was at Hans Mill when it was attacked by the mobsters, and was shot but didn’t die. He was a bishop in Nauvoo, and he and his wife were prominent members of the church in Salt Lake. To be there on their land was a neat experience. It made Ohio feel even more like home. Right near their property we saw a small cemetery and decided to stop least we find anything interesting. As we were wondering among the tombstones I came across the one pictured below. “Pfoutz” is an alternative spelling to “Foutz.” Certainly this is no coincidence. Tom and Stan looked up this Henry Pfoutz when they got home. There are lots of Henry’s in there ancestry. They haven’t established with certainty yet if one of the ones they are related to is this one buried here. There were several other tombstones next to this one that were also Pfoutzes, but they were too worn to read. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any paper to do a rubbing.

One response to “Jacob Foutz Homestead”
That is so cool. Where is this? My mother-in-law is all over her geneology and I am almost positive there is a Jacob Foutz on Matt’s side. I swear I’ve heard her mention the name several times and I know there is some connection with him in Ohio. I’m going to email her right now to ask her. I’ll let you know what I found out.
