So, I’m thinking about starting a gardening blog. I know, I know, you’re saying, but Kjirsti you already have TWO blogs. . . really a third? Well, I’m considering doing the gardening blog rather seriously- with the hopeful attempt of getting a bit of a following. What do you think? What information would you want from a gardening blog? Would you want lots of pictures? What resources would you want? What sort of articles should I feature? Should I make it more region specific? Should I encourage reader participation?
I’m really exited about the idea of getting more involved in the gardening scene in my community- volunteering at the botanical garden, getting a lot in the community garden around the block, and featuring local nurseries. I think it might be more cleveland specific, would that cut down on my following- or would it encourage people to find similar opporuntities resources in their own towns?
Who knows it might be my summer project! I just love the various aspects blogging combines: writing, photography, web design, communication, and of course in my case gardening!
My little seeds are popping up more and more everyday. Here’s a few:
My dahlias were the first to come up. I’m going to try transplanting the second one in each container.
These little english daisy seeds are ever so tiny. I’m not sure the egg carton was such a good idea. It seems to dry out quickly.
I’ve never grown Nasturtium before. I was surprised when the instructions said that these seeds should not be covered, considering their size. However, I’m so glad you don’t have to, because I have loved watching them burst open! Look at that- life!
These are pansies. I love how all of the little seedlings are slightly different.
I planted these in used containers, using regular potting soil.

Kjirsti~
I think your garden blog idea is a ‘must do’ if you have the energy for it! Some gals in my ward started a blog that was region specific but they have a growing following and have been featured on the news and in the paper. I’ve noticed that many people participate in it, even if they don’t live in the Boise Metro area. So if you’re region specific to Cleveland, there will be a lot people who will enjoy it and tons of information that could benefit gardeners no matter where they live. (especially tips on laying out a flower bed or keeping the weeds down– both pointers I’d love insights on!)
This could even be a source of income if you really get into it. If you feature local nurseries’ or lawn care companies’ adds on the side bar with a link to your post about their business and any special deals they’re offering (especially those for your readers) and they’re contact info, then you can make a pretty penny every month doing something you love. Freebies are always a good way to bring in interest, too. Find a business that will donate something in exchange for you featuring them on your blog. Ask your readers to leave a comment, follow you on facebook, or sign up for your e-mail feed and voila! You, my friend have yourself a blog that will attract readers and keeping them coming back. =)
–The ladies who started their Boise blog began with only close family and friends as followers, but with hard work and word-of-mouth they’ve had to upgrade their server to accommodate the amount of views they receive. I really think that you could do well at this. Even if you only want to do it for your own gratification and to share what you know/discover with people in your area, it could be a fun experience… and who knows the people you’ll meet.
PS~ I think you should call your blog something catchy like ‘In Full Bloom’. =)
I, for one, am SUPER excited that you are starting a gardening blog. I’m growing my first garden this year and could definitely use some tips. This is wonderful and I’m glad you are going to be sharing you talent of gardening with the world :).
Wonderful idea! I don’t know what to tell you to write about because, personally, I have a black thumb. I can’t keep anything alive for more than 10 hours after bringing it home from the gardening section. Forget seeds, mine don’t sprout. I need all kinds of help:)
Yeah go for it. I think it would be realy gratifying for you. It may be easier if you do a regional blog. But even from Utah i’ll be excited to follow it.
