Throughout the years I have, surrounded myself with talented creative people. I hereby call on all those creative minds to help Tom and I with our master bedroom. Here’s the schtick:
Tom and I have a gorgeous master bedroom, it’s large, has two huge windows, has a walk in closet and an attached bathroom. Everything one could ask for. However, it lacks style and overall unity. It’s in the fresh idea stages, and I’m excited to see how other people view our room and how they would transform it if it was their own, so please even if it’s just a simple or short idea, leave a comment. And by all means if you have a lot of ideas and it’s a LONG comment, leave it!
Here goes. . . Once upon a time this room was pink, all pink- every surface was pink, okay the ceiling wasn’t, but about everything. The floor was covered in an intense fuschia carpet. Needless to say, Tom said he wouldn’t sleep in the room until the hideous stuff was removed. The pale pink wallpaper remained longer, but I finally tore it off one evening, and so the walls were left in their glue covered state for another year or so. Three weeks ago we set about painting it. . . . Okay you don’t care about all these details, here’s where it stands today-
Ah!! Fresh paint! Here you can see our “new” headboard. (Yay, Craigslist!) Should we paint it?
I covered these curtains, do you think I can keep the orange? Or is the orange and the yellow too much? I want to put long floor length drapes on each side of these curtains, probably in cream. What say you?
We used to have the bed under the window at the right, but it ended up taking up a lot of the room and leaving a large amount of awkward space on the left side of the bed, that went unused. I really think this bed arrangement is the best, though I know it is unusual. I’m looking for a way to give the corner more permanence. While I think the headboard helps a ton, what else could we use? I’ve though about lamps that come up from behind and curve over the bed? A hanging mobile? Hang a large canvas painting from the ceiling? (Who knows it might look rad!)
Here’s my chest of drawers/vanity (also from craigslist). I’m planning on putting that mirror above it. What do you think? Sabina gave me the idea to make the corner a little reading area. (Okay yes I realize that chair doesn’t look like one you’d read on, but it’s what we’ve got!) Should I center the chest of drawers on the wall, or push it over even closer to the garbage can. Some day I imagine I’ll have a rocking chair in place of that little free-off-the-side-of-the-road chair. Will the mirror look strange on the wall if its not centered?
Here’s another angle- from our little reading chair- or piling chair as the case may be. We used these end tables at the end of the bed to give it structure before we had a frame. I think I’ll use them elsewhere now. Or should we paint them and continue to use them like a bench, maybe with baskets underneath- for books, magazines?
Why the one pink door? To leave one thing to remind us of what was. No, because we’re planning to scratch this door and use a curtain here instead. So as to avoid the huge amount of space that is lost in our tiny bathroom when the door is open. What do you think? Is there enough space here for a curtain. What color- style of curtain would you use? If I have curtains on the windows do they need to match with whatever curtain I use here. Should we just leave the door?
What should we put in here?
One of my biggest puzzlements is what sort of bed stands to use. We both could really use a little table to place a cup of water, our scriptures, etc.. Anybody seen anything that would fit in this tiny space and look good?
Here’s a close up the curtain. What ever drapes/curtains I install for the sides, should probably also cover up the top of this pull drape as it isn’t very attractive. Do you like my handy dandy covering job. These used to be puck-able pink plastic. (Thanks for the idea Sabina!)
I love these two fabrics, and originally thought I would use them for pillows for the bed. I still really like the blue, I can’t decide if the orange and yellow are too much. Or if they make the room look Hawaiian- because that’s not really our intent, but maybe we could go for that.
Which of these paint colors do you like? (Thanks to Mom and Dad Foutz for this sturdy chest!)
THE GOODS:
I’ve collected a few things to use in this room. You can see the orange wreath in a few of the pictures, and then there’s this stuff:
It’s hard to get a feel from this picture but these are pretty large, each frame is probably 12×24
Isn’t this so gorgeous. We were given it as a wedding gift. I love it!
Here’s the mirror we’re thinking of putting over the chest of drawers behind it.
Each of these photos are 8x10s, so the frames are larger.(yup, Trevor and Sabina I finally blew up some of the photos I’ve taken to use as art.)
Where should I put this stuff?
My original inspiration for this room was this mood board made by my favorite house blog younghouselove.com
I love the richness of the colors, and the ethnic flare. How can I achieve this look with what we have? What should we start saving up for?
Thanks for all your help in advance!!

I love the colors, the yellow with the orange and the fabrics. I’m not very good at coming up with ideas myself, so I can’t help you there. I really liked your idea of having baskets under the table by your bed for magazines and books. With the white chest of drawers, I think I like the lightest blue the best. And yes, cream curtains would look good. I think it would soften the orange a bit, since you were worried about the orange and yellow being too much. I don’t know about the bathroom door. How much space are you losing in the bathroom? I don’t think the mirror would look funny if it isn’t centered on the wall as long as it is centered with the dresser or hung off center as part of a collage with other items.
Instead of replacing the bathroom door with a curtain, how about rehinging it so it swings out into the bedroom instead of into the bathroom? It may not matter to you two, but future buyers will likely want the privacy (e.g. sound muffling) of a door.
Oh man, I really hope that you approve comments before posting them, because I just left a REALLY long one and it’s not showing up.
Okay, well it didn’t go through a second time, so I just emailed you, Kjirsti.
It looks so great already! How come we didn’t get to see it while we were there?!? We’ll talk. Love you!
Because it was a total wreck, we just finished two days ago.
Those are some very good questions. “I say, that what you say, is what I say.”
I love the color choice it is so alive and yet sophisticated! Good choice and beautiful bed, too!
I like the lightest blue best as well. How about a tree or large plant behind the bed with branches/leaves that hang over the bed slightly. That might fill in the space well and give the room even more life.
