Saturday, a work day

All growing up, Saturday was a work day. We always complained about how all of our friends just played on Saturday, and always thought Mom treated us like slaves. Well, that was in the drama of youth. Now, I find myself looking forward to Saturdays because that is the only day I get to work.

Yesterday was certainly a work day. We took advantage of the opportunity to catch up on sleep and arose reinvigorated and excited. I had primed the upstairs bathroom yesterday, so I set about giving it one more coat of primer, and then later we painted it. It looks great.

(Things to note: Tom and I completely wired these two lights. We ended up having to put them where they are, and not on each side of the mirror, because of support beams that ran on each side of the mirror and left no space for the electrical boxes. The next step in this room is to replace the pepto-bismal counter top and sink!

(Here’s a before picture. Notice the pink wall paper. Also notice the rectangular box lights that ran along each side of the medicine cabinet. I didn’t get it in the above picture but we painted this cabinet cream like the walls. Though I am wondering if it would look better darker. We’ll see when we change the counter top.)

Tom spent the morning sanding drywall, and then I went behind him and taped and mudded the kitchen once again. We are getting better and better every time, and this time we achieved a very smooth finish. While I was gone to opera rehearsal yesterday evening, Tom sanded a second time. The kitchen is sooo close to being ready to paint. There are just a few more little places that need another skim coat. We are really hoping to have it painted by Thanksgiving! Tom also did some caulking outside, had the pain of glass on our door fixed, and sanded the wood putty repair job that I had done earlier. We hope to have that door painted soon too.

(Any area is gray, is an area that was once a huge hole and is now drywalled and mudded.)

(Before and after: Can you believe how many holes we had there? Notice also we got rid of the countess buttons, and devices. You would think our house was a spaceship with all those controls! Take note: Our lovely electrician put in two, two switch electrical boxes right next to each other- instead of one four switch box. Which who cares, except there isn’t a cover that will fit here. So. . . we’ll have to redo it- like most things he did! Sigh.)

The house is finally starting to really come together.

It’s funny though, I had the thought yesterday. That in our our last apartment I burnt those beans and the smell of the smoke pervaded everything. Now, we have drywall dust covering everything!

(I decided after to paint the top cabinets. You can see that as well as the ever dusty floor here.)
