As if the improvement of my new painted front door wasn’t enough I decided to go one step farther and pull off the aluminum siding that was covering the wood trim around the door. I hated the look of it, and was certain there was more character behind it. I was right. It’s difficult to see, but the large pieces of wood running on either side of the door are fluted. I would have been absolutely thrilled with the discovery if it hadn’t also come with news that the wood under the remaining aluminum piece on the left- has been completely eaten out by ants. Yuck! So a semi-simple project turns into a difficult project. (Is there any other pathway in the DYI world?) Fortunately, our dear friend Steve makes furniture and has all the hard-core tools to recreate this with fresh new wood. The wood above the door is also wet and will likely need to be removed. So in the mean time our front door looks like New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. Or maybe I was just going for vintage chic!
