Tom and I spent the day cleaning, and it has felt so good. The last two days were really rough for me. It all started Thursday morning around 1:00 am when I realized orientation started Thursday at 10:00 not Friday.
Orientation was fine, but exhausting- far too many hours of being talked at. I came home tired and was not prepared for what I found. Things have particularly rough with the electricians. I won’t go in to details. We’ll just say my week and a half of held back frustrations and caged impatience broke free Thursday in full force. I hoped it would have the effect that the author of “Under the Tuscan Sun’s” had when she waved her arms stomped her feet and gesticulated wildly to make it clear to the contractor that her wall must be built properly. At first it seemed my demands for change had made an effect, but no. He has already told us that his deadline to finish on Monday has been extended, and his claim to show up with a dry waller from the union today never materialized- no one showed up. So Tom and I are trying to be understanding, to be patient and to be charitable. Life is a test right? (I’m just hoping to pass this one!)
Anyway, the big excitement of the day was that we finally took advantage of the Shaker Heights Service Center’s free drop off. We took four truck loads of carpet, drywall pieces, padding, pipes, you name it, to the center- which is just a couple miles from our house. Our garage is now clean and inviting:

You may notice the couch is two toned. Yeah that happens to be my doing. In an effort to make it super clean I soaked the cushion covers for six hours with Oxy-clean. My mother does things like that all the time and does wonders with stains. So I thought I would try it. Bad idea, at least for me. Now my once a bit stained but same colored couch is now, well two toned. GRRRR.
Has anyone ever removed tile from a wall. Is it hard? I think I’ve decided my next project is going to be the half bath. It’s such a small space, and only needs a few things to make a huge difference. This is my plan, tell me what you think.
Take the tile off the wall to the 1/3 mark. Top the tile with a nice wood trim.
Texture the walls and paint white or yellow.
Paint the vanity cabinet white.
Put in a new mirror.
(The electricians should eventually get to putting in the new light fixture)
Clean the floor and tile thoroughly.
Here’s a picture of what it looks like now.
The tile is really high in this room, giving you the impression that you are in a shower. It makes the room feel skinnyd an tall- like a twinky! I hope taking down the tile to the third mark will open up the room and make it feel more spacious, not to mention a bright white or yellow paint will brighten up the room.
You can’t see it in this picture. But the vanity is white with a sprayed on yellow strip around the middle of the cabinet doors. The counter top is yellow.
Eventually we will put in a pedestal sink.
Did I mention Tom installed a new faucet in here and everything works perfectly. (The previous faucet we bought from Costco was apparently a lemon- it dripped like crazy.)
