The progression of spring

One of the things I have enjoyed most about keeping this blog is noticing the progression of spring. I used to think of spring flowers as one great whole. Now I realize that forsythia and daffodils come first, then tulips, then azalea and lilacs, then bridal wreath spirea and viburnum.

Here’s what’s blooming right now in my yard:

A few more sunny days and this large viburnum bloom is going to bust! If anyone knows the variety of this viburnum I would love it.

This is the first of my azalea to bloom, and boy is it splendid!

I have three bridal wreath spiraea (spiraea prunifolia) in my yard, two which are completely in bloom, another shade dweller who is holding out a bit longer. It is a beautiful shrub that carries these delicate white lowers that completely cover thin arching branches.

The lilacs are almost on their way out. Take note: lilacs will actually have more blooms if their blooms are cut off. So enjoy your lilacs inside as well, and they will reward you with even more blooms next year!
