Grower to Grower

As my first “Grower to Grower” post I’m excited to post pictures from Shawny. This is her first year gardening- and she’s starting from seed. As you can see she’s growing a bunch of tomatoes- in hopes of doing lots of canning come fall. She’s also growing a variety of peppers. Mmmm- I’m thinking salsa!

As you can see Shawny planted several seeds per container- to make sure at least one came up. Her seeds however were very fertile, so almost all of them came up. Now is the difficult task of deciding which one she is going to keep and clipping, or transplanting the others. As she has so many tomatoes it is probably easiest to just clip all but one per container. (One of the sweetest things my Dad ever told me was, last year I was telling him how distressed I was that I was going to have to kill a bunch of my little seedlings. He sympathized and admitted, “I never had the heart to do it!”)

However, living in WA, where he has a much longer growing season, he plants directly into the ground and therefore has more space. Shawny’s going to have severe overcrowding if she leaves all three plants in these small containers.

Way to go Shawny these look great!
