Eek! Japanese-inspired Felt Food

A few months ago I purchased this book:

Yes it’s in Japanese, and yes that is intricately sewn felt produce. I’m not sure what possessed me, but I’m obsessed. (And fortunately, so is Scotland!) I purchased the felt online tonight, a wood blend from Prairie Point Junction, as our local Joanns’ felt was limited and only by the yard.
The hope is that I can have the pieces cut out before hand, and then do the laborious stitching on one of the nine flights I’ll be on in the next month. (Nine Flights- What?!!!- I’ll discuss that later.) I’m hoping the airlines allow me a small sewing needle, and a small pair of scissors. I had an experience coming back from Panama- days after the “underwear bomber” when my bag kept being sent through the metal detector over and over again. I couldn’t figure out what they were looking for, and the security attendants speedy spanish, didn’t help either. Finally after about four passes through the woman retreived what she was looking for, a small metal crochet hook. She held it up proudly for me to see, I made a gesture for knitting, and she gave me an aggresive look and used the small hook as if a dagger- plunged into someone’s gut. Needless to say, I never saw that hook again.
But I need something to do during all this flying- least I go nuts. Maybe high intensity, intricate sewing is just the thing!
