Nelson Kennedy Ledges Park

Tom had Memorial Day off so we headed out to Nelson Kennedy Ledges Park for some hiking. But this was not regular hiking- it was more of a combo between hiking and spelunking. The small park is home to some extraordinary gelogical features. Deep moss covered ravines carve through gorgeous forest. You can climb down into the ravines and work your way through a series of caves, seeing underground streams. It’s hard to describe, so pictures:

From down in a ravine looking up at my boys!

There were a few sections where Scotland HAD to walk, because we couldn’t fit him through on the backpack, at first he was a real tropper, but when it started to get dark, cold, wet and even tighter he got nervous. Spelunking at age 1, very nice.

A shallow fissure, they get up to 60 feet deep!

You would never know it but between me and the rock there is a deep fissure. (Night hiking, not advised!)

Climbing out of an cave where we saw an underground stream

Monday was around 90 degrees, making this hike perfect because as you climbed down into these deep fissures the temperature would drop dramatically, by tens of degrees.

Nelson Kennedy Ledges Park: Two thumbs up!
