The Female Brain- Charity

I just finished reading two books: “The Female Brain” by Louann Brizendine and “Daughters in My Kingdom: The History of the Relief Society.” I didn’t intend to read the two at the same time, but I’m glad I did because they complimented each other beautifully. The first is a biological study of the influences of horomones on a woman’s brain through-out life, the second is a historical look into the spiritual lives of women who have devoted their lives to Christ. Daughters in My Kingdom quotes Joseph Smith: “You are now placed in a situation where you can act according to those sympathies which God has planted in your bosoms.” Brizendine confirms this in her book. As a result of estrogen, woman naturally have a greater propensity to love and nuture. Her chapter on the “mommy brain” speaks of how the brain is completely restructured after childbirth to put nuturing and caring for others at the forefront. (I was surprised to learn that the decline of estrogen during and after menopause reverses this. Making women more focused on their needs and their desires.) However, women don’t need to bear children. Even as toddlers, studies show, girls show a greater sensitivity and awareness of the emotional needs of others. God has truly planted charity in our bosoms.
Here’s a few other quotes from “Daughters of My Kingdom” that I loved:
-“You must enlarge your souls towards others if you’d do like Jesus.” -Joseph Smith
-“Nothing is so much calculated to lead people to forsake sin as to take them by the hand and watch over them with tenderness.” -Joseph Smith
-Describing the foundation work of the Relief Society: “Relief of poverty, relief of illness; relief of doubt, relief of ignorance- relief of all that hinders the joy and progress of woman.” -John A. Widtsoe
-“Let them seek for wisdom instead of power and they will have all the power they have wisdom to exercise.” -Eliza R Snow
-“We want our homes to be filled with sister scriptorians.” -Spencer W. Kimball
-“It is for you to lead the world and to lead especially the women of the world, in everythings that is praise-worthy, everything that is God-like, everything that is uplifting and that is purifying to the chidlren of men. You are the head, not the tail.” -Joseph F. Smith
-“Do you always think in terms of what you get? Don’t you think also in terms of what you have to give?- Make your influence felt.” -George Albert Smith
-“I consider charity- or ‘the pure love of Christ’- to be the opposite of criticism and judging. I have in mind the charity that manifests itself when we are tolerant of others and lenient toward their actions, the kind of charity that forgives, the kind of charity that is patient. I have in mind the charity that impels us to be sympathetic, compassionate, and merciful, not only in times of sickness and affliction and distress but also in times of weakness or error on the part of others. There is a serious need for the charity that gives attention to those who are unnoticed, hope to those who are discouraged, aid to those who are afflicted. True charity is love in action. The need for charity is everywhere.” Thomas S Monson
-“Christ’s was a ministery to individuals, one by one.” -Eliza R. Snow
-“There are many sisters who are living in rags- spiritual rags. They are entitled to gorgeous robes, spiritual robes. . . It is your privilege to go into homes and exchange robes for rags.” -President Kimball
-“Charity is born of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and is an effect of His atonement.” -Henry B. Eyring
-“There are many of the sisters whose labors are not known beyond their own dwellings and perhaps not appreciated there, but what difference does that make? If your labors are acceptable to God, however simple the duties, if faithfully performed, you should never be discouraged.” -Eliza R. Snow
-“Lay aside the things of this world, and seek for the things of a better.”
