Senioritis

It’s that time of the year. I have one more week of class before finals, and I am feeling an extreme dose of senioritis. With my recital completed and the end of my undergraduate career looming, along with the excitement of buying a home, and planing a vacation I am far from excited about studying French diction and music history. Last week was particularly bad, so I am determined to get my act together and stay focused enough to finish out my classes well. I have a short dance to choreograph for my modern class, a final to study for for my romantic music history class, A French song to memorize and a French diction final to study for, and a research paper to write on “How to buy a home” for my writing and rhetoric class.

As I mentioned Tom and I have decided to buy a home. The foreclosure has hit Cleveland especially hard and there are lots of houses available for $30,000- 50,000. We have found one house so far that we really like, it’s in Shaker Heights, one of the nicer suburbs of Cleveland. It is a four bed room home with a big open foyer, front room, and dining room area. It’s definitely a cosmetic fixer-upper, but from what we can see the structure is very sound. We’ll have it inspected to make sure there aren’t hidden problems. There is some really wild wallpaper that we will enjoy removing. (I’ve included some pictures). I’ve been pretty obsessed with the idea of buying a house ever since we found out that it would be so cheap. Hence, the topic of my research paper. I’ve been reading all sorts of books on the procedure, as well as enjoying how-to videos on how to update old homes. I’m more than excited!

This is the front of the home. It’s a corner lot. The awnings will be the first thing to go. I think they make the house look like a cartoon character.

This wall paper will be second to go. Can any help me understand the color palette in this room?

This is a picture from the front entrance, to the left is a beautiful bay window. To the right is the dining room.

This is the kitchen. We’ll paint the cupboards, and replace the knobs and hinges. Put in tile, and add appliances.

(All the homes we are looking at are bank owned, so everything that could be was sold.)

  1. WOW! The house looks amazing. I love the wood floors in the living room, they look like they are in great shape. I am interested to know how the wallpaper in the bathroom was chosen. (I wonder the same thing about ours every day) Good luck with the inspection. We are excited to hear how it goes.

  2. $50k houses?!?!? Wow, I’m jealous. Cassie and I dream about buying a condo around here for 10x that much someday.
Shaker Heights would be a good investment choice – not as likely that the whole neighborhood will go into foreclosure.
Congratulations on the big life step. I hope all goes well!

  3. That house is so exciting! It’s just asking to be bought, loved, and fixed-up a little…that’s so great!
    Congrats, you two 🙂
