Friday was my student’s Spring Voice Recital. As usual I had very mixed feelings. I was so proud of each student for facing their nerves and barreling through, but I also wished that their parents could hear what I hear in lessons- when they are relaxed and comfortable. Regardless, several parents commented on the huge amount of improvement they heard since last December’s recital. I completely agreed. Each student “conquered” in some way. I love how recitals give me the chance to sit and enjoy listening without having to play the piano. Now, I need to learn to relax and breath, so I don’t come home with a headache after tightening nervously with each student’s performance!
Each parent seemed happy with their child’s progress (which is always a worry of mine). As a teacher, there is only so much improvement I can incite. A large degree depends on the student’s own decision to practice and pay attention. I’ve been happy that my three youngest students’ moms sit in on their lessons. That way they are learning what to listening for, and aware of their child’s potential. I am a huge proponent of healthy singing, and work tirelessly with all my students to rid them of the habit of over-singing. It’s hard because all they hear at school is “louder, louder” but the fact is, young voices aren’t loud! That combined with the belter style they hear primarily on the radio and in more modern musicals, makes for a real challenge. Thankfully their parents are starting to understand my persistence. Quinn, sang several performances with her church one week and became quite hoarse- her Mother, aware that she was belting, decided to pull her out of the choir. Another student was placed as alto in the high school musical- allowing her to “belt.” She still hasn’t recovered from the damage that did to her higher range- more than a month later.
It’s fun to see each recital get progressively better. This time each student sang two songs. We had one duet. Next recital I’m going to have everyone introduce the context of their piece, and include more group numbers. I’d love to add more choreography! I’ve also appreciated realizing what I don’t need to stress about. No one really cares if the programs are on cheap printer paper. It doesn’t matter if the plastic cups aren’t all the same size for the reception.
