One big pile of dirt
Sick of my hard clay soil, I took the plunge and bought a truck load of leaf humus for my yard. I really should had someone stand in the picture so you could tell the height and breadth of this monster. My sister Sabina (who is visiting from Utah!) and I worked at it all…

Aldi- Japanese Maples
I was at Aldi’s on Euclid yesterday and they were selling small Japanese Maple trees for $14.99. I bought one and it is beautiful. They run $19.99 each at springhillnursery.com and that’s with out tax and shipping. So if you want to add some grace to your garden stop by your local Aldi. They should…

MMM dogwoods!
Dogwoods (dogwood cornus features above) have to be one of the most delicate trees. If they were human they would be that girl who is simply beautiful and never wears makeup. In my hometown of Moses Lake, WA, dogwoods have to be nursed along and grow ever so slowly. I was shocked to find them…

Closure
I finished up my last class of my masters today. The strange thing is, it didn’t even phase me. When I finished my last class of my undergraduate I literally yelled out and called everyone in my family. I’m not sure why I haven’t felt the same closure this time. Maybe because I am still…

Grower to Grower
Reader Terri’s seedlings are really coming along. These are peppers I’m thinking? Here you can see her carrots, lettuce and onions growing. (Terri, you can actually put those in the ground now!) Veggies that can be outside now are: peas, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, mixed greens, onions, radishes. So choose a week that is going to…

A word on discount plants
My husband and I are both students, which means our budget is limited. As a result I am always on the look out for sales and clearance items. This can be difficult when it comes to plants. Usually discounted plants mean half-dead plants. I have learned, however, that if I am patient usually I can…

One year old daisies
I planted this daisy and two others last year. They started tiny, dwarfed by the red party cups I planted them in. Now look at them! I’m so proud. They didn’t bloom last year, as is normal. We’ll see how they do this year, I hoping for tons of star like blooms!

Bleeding Heart
Last year I bought two bleeding hearts (Lamprocapnos spectabilis) to give some color to a shady spot in my yard. I mentioned in an early post that I was delighted to see they had recovered from dry conditions last summer. Well they are blooming beautifully now and have created just the pop of color I…

Tulips
Just had to share: I believe the name of this tulip is Carnivale. Fitting!
