A few Scotland stories least I forget:
Scotter has started to cry when people leave. Yesterday, he started to cry when Tom got ready to leave for work. Tom picked him up for one last hug. Immediately Scotter turned his head towards the door and with his back to me, used his back hand to wave “bye.” Apparently, he was going with Dad.

Yesterday, Scotland and I were outside, I was weeding and he was playing. At one point he walked down the sidewalk to the front yard and started to go out of sight. I called to him:
“Scotland, stay by Momma, stay where I can see you.” He called back, jabbering,
“Mom, I’m just going to go in the front yard.”
“Scotter come back and play in the back yard by me.”
“Mom, please, I just want to climb up the hill in the front yard.”
“Scotland if you don’t stay by Mommy wer’re going to have to go inside.”
Scotland then looked at me defiantely and said “No!” and walked the other way.
This is a first for him, the rebellious use of the big N word.

Scotland has started to request bread, it’s his favorite food. He knows the sign for bread, you use your right hand in a chopping motion, and often especially at meal time he’ll start chopping the hair in a fast furious motion with either an intense expression or a big smile. He’s also quite aware of thirst. Often after we’ve been playing outside for a little bit, he’ll come up to me pointing to his mouth our sign for “hungry” and “thirsty.”

Tom and Scotland have had a lot of nights together, due to my participation in “This is Kirtland.” They’ve taken to watching a show for a few minutes. Tom will put on Curious George and they will lie down on the couch together, Scotter resting his head on Tom’s arm. This will last for about three sweet minutes before Scotter’s up to play and the TV is turned off.

The other night Tom was putting Scotland to bed and started to sing to him “Daddy’s Homecoming.” As he got close to the end, “Pat his checks and give him What?!. . . .” Scotter went in and gave Tom a kiss on the cheek. (The song ends: “A great big kiss!”) More and more we’re realzing how very much Scotland is picking up.

Yesterday as we were reading books Scotland would put the book we’d just read away and then get another one.
One response to “Faces: 17.5 months”
