When I was pregnant I used to openly hope, and secretly doubt, that I would have one of those magical children who politely announce they are tired and then lie down happily to take naps. The concept fascinated me. I had never witnessed such an act amongst my own family, but had marveled several times while babysitting others. Everyday I’m struck with disbelief when Scotland fusses a bit (not always politely), is swaddled and given a passy and then lies down peacefully. I’m always expecting a tantrum but he often just looks up at me contently, then slowly falls asleep. I used to always rock him until he was completely asleep, but feelings of guilt as a result of various sleep method instructions have led me to lie him down awake- and voila, he doesn’t mind, in fact he likes it! He’ll lay there looking around for a while, happily sucking on his pacifier, and then drift off.
Likewise, most of the time he wakes up happy. I’ll hear him over the monitor gabbing away, kindly calling for me. When I go up to get him, he’ll greet me with a smile and a little wiggle. I’ll pick him up, feed him, and then we’ll play!
I keep wondering when I’m going to wake up. In the mean time I’m just very very grateful!
